Matrice 600 Review

Product Review

There is no doubt that the Matrice 600 has been produced to target mainly cinematic professionals, offering them one of the most powerful drones ever manufactured.

The Matrice 600 (or M600) is an ingenious and highly advanced aerial platform for professional photographers, filmmakers and industry specialists. It has unprecedented power and abilities, carrying professional heavy cameras and electronics up into the sky for as long as 30 minutes.

Matrice 600's six-rotor system can carry a maximum payload of 6.0 kg, which is a lot. Why does it need to carry so much load? That's because being compatible with DJI's full range of Zenmuse and gimbals, including the Zenmuse X and the Z15 line and with the new Ronin-MX, it means that it needs to use highly professional and heavy equipment. For example, with a Zenmuse X5, it can fly up to 36 minutes.

Such a heavy platform needs extra power, so DJI supplied it with six Intelligent Batteries that provide not just power but also redundancy should a battery fail. The M600 also features Lightbridge 2, an updated version of DJI's video downlink technology.

Together with the Matrice 600, DJI launched an updated version of its Ronin stabilizing rig, the Ronin MX. The new three-axis Ronin MX can take to the air and was designed to work with the M600. When fitted to the drone, it allows compatibility with third-party cameras including models from RED, Black Magic, Canon, Panasonic Sony and Nikon.

Flight times will vary depending on the carried camera, though the drone features self-adaptive flight systems that make adjustments depending on the payload, allowing for up to 16 minutes of air time with a larger camera such as the Red Epic.

To handle the complex Matrice, DJI has built a new flight controller named A3. The controller is available as an upgrade and uses three Global Navigation Satellite System units and three inertial measurement units, which when paired with DJI's Real-Time Kinematic technology can supply accurate perfect positioning. This quality enables directors to recreate take after take without diverging from an identical flight path.

The M600 features Lightbridge 2, an updated version of the video downlink technology that allows live streaming and HD video from up to 5 km (3.1 mi) away. The download is accessed through the DJI GO app, which also includes battery monitoring and the ability to configure aperture, shutter speed and video and photo capture when working with any Zenmuse X-series camera. It also allows for remote focus on the Zenmuse X5 and X5R cameras.

And it gets even better! Although it's a highly complex and smart platform, the over-featured Matrice 600 is not complicated to use. It has been designed to be user friendly and lets you set it up and get it flying in no time. The new A3 flight controller manages to keep the drone in control smoothly and the landing gear is retractable so that it doesn't get in the way of full 360-degree footage.

The new Matrice 600 is definitely a step into the future of drone flying for professional cinematography.
